Last night after President-Elect Biden spoke to the nation to declare his victory I took my son upstairs to get his bath for the night and then put him down to sleep. The curiosity, joy, and love in him reminded me what life is all about. There are traits that I strive to teach my son as he grows up. I want him to respect people. I want him to have decency to others. I want him to understand what it means to have integrity. Above all I want him to be of high moral character. Before we went upstairs my two year old son stopped to listen to Biden on the television. Yes, he probably had no clue what was going on, but if Donald Trump was on that screen I would have told him to stop watching. Words are everything and words matter.
The past four years have been painful. The past four years have been filled with hate. The past four years have been filled with the demonization of American society. Trump divided this country along hard lines because of his demeanor and his lack of decency for people.
Now, I don’t conform to the policies of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. There is a lot that I disagree with them on. However, I can respect the hell out of people that have a caring heart and show that through their actions and words. I will be the first to challenge anything that comes out of the Biden White House but that is what makes America great. Trump never understood that. The moment someone disagreed with him on an issue he immediately went on the attack and tried to vilify that person on Twitter and on camera. That is not what politics is about. Nobody agrees 100% of the time with their opponents.
The person that sits in the Oval Office has so much influence on the minds of people in this country and especially the impressionable ones like my 2 year old son. As a parent it is my job to teach these morals to my child and CNN contributor Van Jones hit it on the head yesterday.
Van Jones couldn’t contain his emotions while talking about Joe Biden’s projected victory over President Donald Trump.
“Well, it’s easier to be a parent this morning. It’s easier to be a dad. It’s easier to tell your kids, ‘character matters,'” Jones said while on CNN on Saturday, as he began to wipe away tears. “Telling the truth matters. Being a good person matters.”
“It’s easier for a lot of people. If you’re Muslim in this country, you don’t have to worry if the president doesn’t want you here. If you’re an immigrant, you don’t have to worry if the president is going to be happier to have babies snatched away or send Dreamers back for no reason,” he continued, referencing Trump’s previous comments about immigrants.
“This is vindication for a lot of people who have really suffered,” he said through tears. “You know ‘I can’t breathe’? That wasn’t just George Floyd. That was a lot of people who have felt they couldn’t breathe. Every day, you’re waking up and you’re getting these tweets and you just don’t know — and you’re going to the store and people who have been afraid to show their racism are getting nastier and nastier to you.”
“And you’re worried about your kids. And you’re worried about your sister and can she just go to Walmart and get back into her car without somebody saying something to her?” he added. “And you’ve spent so much of your life energy just trying to hold it together.”
“This is a big deal for us just to be able to get some peace and to have a chance for a reset. And the character of the country matters. And being a good man matters,” Jones said.
What we witnessed yesterday with President Elect Joe Biden’s speech to the nation was the most Presidential moment we have seen in four years. It wasn’t some rant on Twitter or some rant in front of reporters. It was real and it was Presidential.
Basic Human Decency, Integrity, and Character matter.
