Jacob Hornberger’s Open Letter to Libertarians

Dear Fellow Libertarian,

For 30 years, I have battled for liberty in the educational arena as founder and president of The Future of Freedom Foundation, a non-profit educational foundation whose mission is to present the principled case for libertarianism (and which, as a non-profit, does not endorse my candidacy).

Last November, I decided to seek the Libertarian Party presidential nomination. I want to take on these people who are destroying our liberty and our country — Democrats and Republicans alike — in a more direct way — by running against their presidential candidates, Donald Trump and Joe Biden, in the upcoming general election.

As you know, for decades these people have been taking our country in very bad direction — toward death, conflict, crisis, and impoverishment.

Even while Americans are suffering high death tolls from the coronavirus, Donald Trump, like Barack Obama and George W. Bush before him, along with the U.S national-security establishment, continue to wreak death and suffering on people who have never invaded the United States in the Middle East, Afghanistan, and Africa with bombs, missiles, and sanctions.

Meanwhile, Trump is doing his best to provoke wars with Iran and Venezuela, with no regard to the number of people, including American troops, who would be killed in these interventionist escapades. That’s precisely what Hillary Clinton would have done if she had been elected president instead.

Joe Biden would be no different. His commitment to foreign interventionism is as complete as that of Trump and the Republicans. Don’t forget his enthusiastic support for the invasion of Iraq, another country that had never invaded the United States.

As a libertarian, I am firmly committed to restoring America’s heritage of non-interventionism. If I were president, I would order the Secretary of Defense to immediately bring home all U.S. troops from everywhere, including Korea, Europe (World War II is over), the Middle East, Afghanistan, Iraq, Africa, and Latin America. No more killing and dying for nothing.

I am committed to doing more than that. It’s time to end the worst mistake in U.S. history — the conversion of the federal government after World War II from a limited-government republic with a basic military force to a national-security state. If our ancestors had been presented with a Constitution that was going to bring into existence the CIA, the NSA, and what President Eisenhower called “the military-industrial complex,” they never would have approved the Constitution. This totalitarian-like apparatus has driven our nation to the dark side. It is time to restore our founding governmental system of a limited-government republic to our land.

The coronavirus crisis has exposed what both Democrats and Republicans have done to the American people with their decades of out-of-control federal spending, taxes, and monetary debasement to fund their ever-growing cancerous welfare-warfare state. We now can clearly see that millions of Americans do not have savings to get them through even one or two months of unemployment. This is the legacy of Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal and Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society, which converted America from a free-market, private-property nation to a socialist welfare state, funded by two of the most corrupt and tyrannical agencies in U.S. history, the Internal Revenue Service and the Federal Reserve, both of which need to be thrown into the dustbin of history.

America’s heritage of liberty was a way of life that left people free to keep everything they earned and decide for themselves what to do with it. No income tax and no IRS. And no Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, education grants, farm subsidies, foreign aid, and other socialist programs. Charity was 100 percent voluntary.

That sound founding principle of our nation brought about the society with the highest standard of living in history. People were going from rags to riches in one generation. When people were free to keep everything they earned, they saved huge amounts of money, which, unlike today, enabled them to get through economic crises and emergencies.

America was also the most charitable nation in history. When people were free to keep everything they earned, they built America’s churches, hospitals, libraries, opera houses, and colleges, all on a voluntary basis.

I am committed to restoring that sound founding principle of America — economic liberty and private charity — to our land. We just need to recapture our faith in ourselves, in others, in freedom, and in God.

For decades, Democrats and Republicans have enforced one of the most deadly, crooked, corrupt, destructive, and racially bigoted programs in U.S. history — the war on drugs. Drug addiction has no place in the criminal-justice arena. It belongs only in the private sector — in counseling and treatment centers. I am firmly committed to getting government totally out of the drug-enforcement business.

When I was growing up, America had the finest healthcare system in history, one in which prices were so low and stable that people didn’t need health insurance. Going to the doctor was like going to the grocery store. And doctors and hospitals provided seniors and the poor with free or deeply discounted medical care, on a purely voluntary, charitable basis. And then came Medicare and Medicaid, two massive socialist programs that ended up producing a perpetual crisis of ever-increasing healthcare costs, which have bankrupted countless Americans.

And that was before the coronavirus crisis! The crisis has exposed the faults and failures of the Democrat-Republican system of healthcare central planning, with shortage of masks, testing kits, ventilators, and healthcare providers, along with tyrannical measures that always come with the failure of socialist central planning. Ludwig von Mises called the results of this type of dysfunctional system “planned chaos.” What better term to describe what is happening in America with the coronavirus crisis?

There is but one solution to America’s decades-old healthcare crisis — a total free-market healthcare system, one in which government officials play no role. Freedom and free markets are our heritage, and they are the only things that work.

And then there is the out-of-control federal spending that has sucked trillions of dollars out of the pockets of hard-pressed American taxpayers for decades. On top of that is the ever-growing federal debt, which American taxpayers are responsible for repaying. Today, each taxpayer’s share of the $23 trillion dollars in federal debt is $199,000! How many American families have the money to pay their share of the federal government’s debt? And now, Democrats and Republicans both are adding another $6 trillion onto that debt. These people are out of control!

And then there is the Federal Reserve, the agency that destroyed the finest monetary system in the world. For decades, it has been printing the money to fund the Democrat-Republican welfare-warfare state, wiping out the value of savings and income of millions of seniors and poor people. Today, this crooked and corrupt agency is printing money like it was going out of style, setting the stage for more massive plundering of people through monetary debasement.

I am seeking the Libertarian Party presidential nomination because I want to take these people on for what they have done and are doing to our country. I want to show Americans that there is a way out of this statist morass into which Democrats and Republicans have jointly plunged our nation. I want to lead America in a different direction — a libertarian direction, one toward economic liberty, free markets, and a limited-government republic.

Libertarian principles are our greatest asset. That’s why I joined the Libertarian Party 30 years ago, when I accepted an invitation to serve three terms on the LP Platform Committee. I want to run a campaign of principle for “the Party of Principle.” Our principles are our greatest weapon. I’ll put them up against all the crooked and corrupt power and money of the Democrats and Republicans any day of the week.

Today, thanks to our donors, we have raised $75,000. We have put your money to good use.

Your generous support has enabled us to win Libertarian Party primary elections in North Carolina, California, Missouri, and New York, along with a second-place finish in Massachusetts.

Your generous support has also helped us to win caucuses in Iowa, Minnesota, and Ohio.

Your generous support has also helped us to finish in first place in straw polls at LP conventions in California, Florida, Arkansas, Indiana, Virginia, Montana (tie), and, most recently, Kansas and Oklahoma, along with a second-place finish in Alabama.

Take a look at our new video ad “End the Wars,” which is garnering thousands of views on the Internet. We want to do more of these video ads, but we need your help to do so.

There are three weeks left until the LP national convention. The race for the LP presidential nomination is wide open. My campaign team and I are fighting hard to win it. I have attended 18 state conventions and participated in 12 presidential debates. I love it! The high level of electricity and energy in the party is charging my libertarian batteries!

Since the coronavirus crisis hit, we have not let up a bit, immediately shifting all of our efforts to online, with podcast interviews, live streaming “Ask me Anythings,” video presentations, presidential debates, articles, and blog posts.

I want to move America in a better direction — one toward life, liberty, health, peace, prosperity, and harmony with the people of the world.

Will you help me win this nomination with an initial or additional generous donation to my campaign? Will you help me take on these people, Democrats and Republicans alike, who are destroying our liberty and our nation?
